GLP-1 or bariatric surgery?

By February 13, 2025No Comments

Obesity can severely impact a person’s lifestyle, independence, and overall well-being. People not only lose these but are in danger of losing their identity. Dr. Carlton and our team at LoneStar Bariatrics want you to take back control of your well-being, identity and feel confident again.

We have a comprehensive program and team to help advise and guide you along your journey.

We offer GLP-1 medical treatments in addition to bariatric surgery such as the gastric bypass, sleeve, and duodenal switch.

Medications and such are good options and have their advantages but now, more so than ever, we are using the GLP-1 medications alone, as a bridge to surgery or in conjunction with surgery.

Surgery results are faster and initially more impactful but both can help decrease hunger and provide fullness or satiety.

Over the years, thousands of LoneStar bariatric patients have lost 100lbs or more after surgery and regained their independence, confidence, and life.

They have trained for Spartan races, started new careers, and even new relationships. Obesity no longer controls their life and they are not burdened by this disease.

Now prescribing GLP-1 medications for years, we are seeing good results but this requires adequate oversight, coaching, and increasing the dosage monthly.

However, GLP-1 are commonly overprescribed, often with little oversight or supervision.

Bariatric surgery can improve or resolve multiple obesity-related health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and sleep apnea.

We have welcomed and incorporated the GLP-1 medication to augment further weight loss while helping with weight maintenance.

GLP-1 increases the production of insulin and inhibit the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar.

These medications also slow gastric emptying or releasing food into the small intestine and reduce appetite while promoting a feeling of fullness, or satiety.

Both surgery and medication can enhance the quality of life for individuals, but also reduce the healthcare costs associated with managing these conditions.

Our team at LoneStar Bariatrics closely monitor your progress and success offering continued supervision.

We want people to succeed and can help you navigate the choices. Initially, we prescribed the medications alone though now these are safely and routinely used as a bridge or beginning phase for those seeking surgery.

Surgery has more profound and permanent results. Weight loss and improvement or cure of medical conditions is faster with longer lasting results. The medications are taken monthly and the dosage is increased based on results and people’s tolerance. These can cause bloating, nausea, constipation, and even mental challenges such as the inability to focus.

Bariatric surgery can have a more profound effect on one’s interpersonal relationships. Some experience growth and improvements in their confidence, physical and mental well-being, and personal and professional lives.

Please call our office to schedule a consultation and discuss which options may be the best for you. We look forward to meeting and discussing your needs.
