Failures are challenging, but … Nothing and no one is perfect.
Although bariatric surgery can provide amazing results, even this process presents challenges.
Here at LoneStar Bariatrics, with staff experience of GREATER than 20 years in the Dallas / Plano / Fort Worth and Grapevine area, we understand these challenges.
Challenges abound and are multifactorial.
First, we want to provide some clarity and definitions.
The OG, your ORIGINAL surgery, is called the Index Procedure.
If someone had a previous procedure, such as a Gastric Bypass (RYGB), and had a second surgery on their Gastric Bypass, this is simply called a Revision. The same holds true for a Gastric Sleeve (VSG) or any procedure.
HOWEVER, if the original operation is changed to a new, second procedure, this is called a conversion.
Examples of conversions are Glastric Sleeve (VSG) to Duodenal Switch (DS) or Lap Band to Gastric Bypass (RYGB).
Most commonly, but not exclusively, patients undergo conversions.
Now the reasons behind the conversion are numerous. These include:
the original surgery anatomy:
- pouch dilation
- loss of restriction
- obstruction
- ulcer
- bleeding
- lap band slippage
- lap band failure
- lap band erosion
mental / psychological / financial / personal reasons:
- life stressors
- new job
- losing job
- Covid
- marriage
- divorce
- sickness
As stated above, the reasons, the WHY, and the WHAT are numerous and highly variable.
The conversion data is highly variable because of the numerous variations.
Examples of conversions are:
- Gastric sleeve (VSG) to Duodenal switch (DS)
- Gastric sleeve (VSG) to Gastric Bypass (RYGB)
- Lap band to Gastric sleeve (VSG)
- Lap band to Gastric Bypass (RYGB)
- Lap band to Duodenal switch (DS)
- Gastric Bypass (RYGB) to Duodenal switch (DS)
Here at LoneStar Bariatric, we focus on both the WHAT and the WHY. The published successes range all over the board. Understanding the struggles and investigating the anatomical and personal challenges translates into better outcomes. Quite frankly, patients will NOT optimize their chances of the best success without this approach.
