What is a Gastric Bypass?

A minimally invasive weight-loss procedure called a gastric bypass alters how your stomach and small intestine process food. In general, the gastric bypass operation is more aggressive than the gastric sleeve.

This operation takes between one and one and a half hours. Using small abdominal incisions, a laparoscopic procedure called a gastric bypass is carried out. In order to digest your food and avoid using a portion of your small intestine, Dr. Carlton makes a little pouch in your stomach. Making these modifications has a big influence on the hormones in your stomach that regulate blood sugar, appetite, and fullness in addition to altering how much food you need to consume. You may reduce 60–80% of your extra body weight with the use of a gastric bypass.

Who is a good candidate for a Gastric Bypass?

Dr. Carlton and his team usually recommend gastric bypass if you have:

  • A body mass index (BMI) of 35-39.9 and a weight-related health issue
  • A BMI of 40 or higher
  • Tried losing weight unsuccessfully with diet and exercise

Gastric bypass isn’t for everyone, however. As part of your appointment, Dr. Carlton and his staff carefully assess your eligibility by going through your surgical choices for weight reduction, your general expectations, the risks of gastric bypass surgery, and more.

What can I expect a Gastric Bypass surgery?

A gastric bypass typically lasts 90 minutes, and a night in the hospital is often necessary. In place of a big incision, Dr. Carlton performs gastric bypass surgery using laparoscopic methods. Little incisions, specialized instruments, and video guidance are used in laparoscopic surgeries to carry out difficult operations.

The long-term results of the bypass, which include weight reduction and the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), and Hyperlipidemia, are comparable but significantly better (High Cholesterol).

*Individual results may vary.

I am 6 months post op and have had the best experience with Dr Carlton. I am so thankful for what he has done for me he changed my life so much! I just took my first plane trip in 30 years without needing an extension seat belt. I’m more active now at 49 years old than I was at 30. I feel great I look better but most importantly I am healthier and on the road to many more special years ahead! I will forever be grateful for Dr Carlton and his whole staff these people are a true blessing!!

Dr.Carlton and the staff at LoneStar Bariatrics are the best! I had gastric sleeve surgery on 2/3/23 and am down over 60 pounds. I’m confident I will reach my goal weight in the next 6 months. I’m getting married in September and want to look great. Dr. Carlton called me the day after surgery to see how I was doing. He followed up 3 days later to check on me. He cares about his patients. Highly recommend you set an appointment if you are serious about losing weight and looking great.

I saw Dr. Carlton for the first time on 01/11/23. I was a little apprehensive at first to go see a new physician of any type, due to some previous bad experiences etc. I had Dr. Carlton do an EGD on the following Monday 01/16/23. My experience so far with Dr. Carlton has been only positive. I am looking forward to having Dr. Carlton perform a Bariatric Revision surgery in a few weeks, and I anticipate being able to share my success and progress with everyone at that time.
