What is a Gastric Sleeve?
A gastric sleeve, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, is a frequent, minimally invasive bariatric surgery used to help individuals lose considerable amounts of weight. It may also lower your chances of developing other life-threatening health issues, such as:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Heart Disease
- Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol)
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
- Infertility
- Sleep Apnea
- Type 2 Diabetes
Dr. Carlton performs gastric sleeve procedures laparoscopically using small instruments, a long, flexible measuring device known as a bougie, and a miniature camera. After creating a tiny incision in your abdominal wall, he removes approximately three-quarters of your stomach, leaving a smaller portion behind.
Gastric sleeve surgery typically takes around an hour, and the majority of patients are able to return home the same day.

Who is a good candidate for a Gastric Sleeve?
Gastric sleeve surgery is usually recommended if you have:
- A body mass index (BMI) of 35-39.9.
- A weight-related health issue, or if your BMI is 40 or higher.
If you’ve attempted to lose weight via food and exercise without success, Dr. Carlton will talk to you about surgical weight reduction alternatives. The success of gastric sleeve surgery depends on the patient’s willingness to make long-term adjustments to their lifestyle.
Dr. Carlton will consult with you extensively about the gastric sleeve procedure, your goals for weight reduction, and any potential hazards involved with the operation if you decide to go forward with it.
What can I expect from a Gastric Sleeve surgery?
After gastric sleeve surgery, your stomach will look and be the same size as a banana. This makes a big difference in how much food you can eat for the rest of your life. Getting gastric sleeve surgery also changes the hormones in your gut that help you feel hungry or full and keep your blood sugar in check.
You should have less of an appetite after your procedure, which makes it easier to lose a lot of weight quickly. As you get used to your new stomach, Dr. Carlton and his team help you learn to read its signs and choose healthy foods. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea are just some of the health problems that get much better for many patients.
To generate the best long-term results, it’s important to check in and see how things are going.
