Primary Bariatric Procedures
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Gastric sleeve surgery involves removing approximately 80% of the stomach, leaving behind a sleeve-shaped stomach. Since the new stomach holds much less food, you feel satisfied after smaller meals. The procedure also removes the portion of the stomach that produces much of the hunger hormone ghrelin. Since the intestines are not rerouted, digestion remains largely unchanged, yet it still promotes sustainable weight loss through reduced food intake.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery helps you lose weight by reducing how much food your stomach can hold while also changing how your digestive system absorbs calories and nutrients. During the procedure, Dr. Carlton creates a small stomach pouch and connects it directly to a lower portion of the small intestine, bypassing part of the digestive tract. This promotes fullness, curbs hunger pangs, and decreases calorie absorption, supporting significant, long-term weight loss.
Gastric Balloon
A gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss treatment that helps you eat less by taking up space inside your stomach. During the procedure, a soft balloon is placed into the stomach through the mouth using an endoscope and filled with saline or gas. As the balloon occupies part of the stomach, you feel full more quickly and remain satisfied longer after meals. It is typically used alongside dietary changes, exercise, and ongoing medical support.
Duodenal Switch
The duodenal switch combines a sleeve gastrectomy with an intestinal bypass to produce substantial weight loss. First, the stomach is reduced to a sleeve, limiting food intake. Next, the surgeon reroutes a significant portion of the small intestine so fewer calories and nutrients are absorbed during digestion. This procedure also changes gut hormones that influence hunger, fullness, and blood sugar regulation. It is often recommended for patients with severe obesity.
